Writer-director John Carney’s film Once was turned into an award-winning stage musical in 2007, following an Off Broadway run at New York Theatre Workshop. Now his more recent film Sing Street, for which Carney also co-wrote music and lyrics, follows Once to the boards, again transferring after a NYTW run, and again with a book by acclaimed Irish writer Enda Walsh (Grief is the Thing with Feathers). The new musical, set in Dublin in the hard times of 1982, follows a group of teenagers who form their own pop band and shoot their own videos, gaining a following that transforms them from nerdy outcasts to the coolest kids in school. Tony winner and Drama League Directors Project alum Rebecca Taichman (Indecent) directs.
