10 Directors. 10 Hours. 10 New Work-In-Progress Showings.
Should voters choose their politicians, or should politicians choose theirvoters? Packingand Cracking is a multimediamapmaking event that exposes the ubiquity of the latter: politicians usingtheir power to draw district lines in their favor, through a widespread processknown as gerrymandering. Set on a theater-sized map of one gerrymandered statewith the audience arranged across it, Packing and Cracking drawsand redraws maps around audience members in real time, utilizing the softwaremost often used to gerrymander, showing how easy gerrymandering is, and askingwhat, if anything, we should do about it.
The First Stage Festival is where new work takes its first steps. 10 directors will have 10 hours to focus, manifest, and present a particular moment or element of a new work for an audience. 10 work-in-progress showings will provide glimpses into the future of the American Theater.
