Baz Luhrmann’s movie musical extravaganza Moulin Rouge! comes to Broadway, crashing decades of recent pop hits into a story set at the previous turn of the century. The show casts off the constraints of the period piece for a timeless love story set in the decadent Montmartre Quarter of Paris, where glitz, excess and glamour camouflage the grinding poverty of the artists who make it all so memorable. A young writer named Christian (Aaron Tveit of Catch Me If You Can), falls in love with the titular cabaret’s star singer, Satine (Karen Olivo, Tony winner for West Side Story). But the cabaret’s owner, Harold Zidler (Danny Burstein, Tony nominee for Fiddler on the Roof) is determined to end their romance and keep his star bound to the stage. Tony nominee and Drama League Directors Project alum Alex Timbers (Rocky, Here Lies Love) directs.
