The Drama League is overjoyed to welcome back one of our alums "In Conversation with Tony Phelan". Tony will be discussing his journey as director, writer, showrunner, and producer. Here is a wonderful opportunity to discuss with one of the best in the field about what it takes to build a successful career across multiple mediums and how to break in and build a career in Film/TV.

After joining GREY’S ANATOMY as a writing team at the start of season 2, Tony Phelan and Joan Rater rose through the ranks and co-ran the show alongside creator Shonda Rhimes for seasons 7 through 10. For their work on GREY’S ANATOMY they earned a WGA Award for Best New Series in Television in 2005 and were nominated for two Emmy Awards in 2006 and 2007, both for "Outstanding Drama Series." In addition, Tony directed over a dozen episodes of the series throughout the years, including “Song Beneath the Song,” the Grey’s musical.

Other writing credits include LAW & ORDER: TRIAL BY JURY; PUSH, NEVADA; THREAT MATRIX; MD’s; COVER ME; and the Lifetime Original Movie, HAUNTING SARAH. 

In 2014, Tony and Joan signed an overall deal with CBS Television Studios and served as consulting producers on MADAM SECRETARY, where they wrote two episodes and Tony directed one.


Last season they created DOUBT, set in the high stakes world of Manhattan criminal defense, which premiered on CBS Wednesday, February 15, 2017 and ran thirteen episodes.  The show was nominated for a GLAAD Media Award as Best Drama.

The husband and wife team enjoyed a successful Off-Broadway run with their stage play GOOD WILL at The Director’s Company in 1998, and The New York Times gave it a rave review, hailing it as “touching and thought-provoking.”

As a theatre director, Tony worked at Williamstown; New Jersey Shakespeare Festival; Barrington Stage; Goodspeed Opera House; the Group Theatre in Seattle and he enjoyed a long collaboration with Theatreworks/USA.

Tony is an alum of Yale University and lives in Pasadena with Joan, their two children, Tom and Sally, and their dogs, Reggie and Lola.
