The collapse of the Lehman Brothers financial services firm, which set the Great Recession of 2008 in motion, would seem to be a quintessentially American story. But it was Italian playwright Stefano Massini who turned the tale into stage drama in 2015. An English adaptation by Ben Power, directed by Sam Mendes (The Ferryman), created a sensation at the National Theatre in London, and now the American premiere of the play, titled The Lehman Trilogy, comes to the Park Avenue Armory in New York. The play follows the founding of the Lehman firm by Bavarian Jewish immigrants in 1850 through its ignominious 21st century bankruptcy and dissolution, in a sweeping survey of the expansions and catastrophes of the American economy. The Independent (UK) calls it “an enthralling, powerful, thought-provoking play directed with brilliant minimalism and extraordinary elegance.” The cast is headed by Simon Russell Beale (The Death of Stalin), Ben Miles (The Crown) and Adam Godley (Anything Goes).
